Enrico will speak at the International Conference on Open Source 2004 on 19 December. He will appear in two slots:

In the 1st slot (19 December 2004, 15.20 - 16.05), Enrico will talk about the projects he's maintaining at the moment "Debtag" and "Guessnet".

In the 2nd slot (19 December 2004, 16.05 - 16.50), Enrico will share his experience of working with Bologna high schools and local government to implement open source software in public sector.

Title: The model for developing free software - How to customize software? Take HPC/Grid/Cluster computing as an example

Abstract:

This talk will show the potential of situated software that are tailored to meet specific users' needs. The speaker will demonstrate ways of customising software without losing ties with the mainstream software development in light of the case study of Custom Debian Distributions.

The contents of the talk will cover:

Title: Custom Debian Distributions

Date & Time: tbc (length: ca. 1 - 1.5 hour)

Venue: National Taiwan University Stadium Cafe, Taipei

Abstract:

This talk will introduce the potential of free software as both a teaching and a learning tool in schools. The speaker will present both educational and technical issues arising in the real-life examples from Italian schools, which is belived to be stimulating to software developers, practitioners and policy makers in Taiwan.

The contents of the talk will cover:

1. critique on schools' prolonged employment of proprietary software that drives them unintentionally to support proprietary software, which consequently forces         students to use specific brands of software
2. philosophy behind using and implementing free software in schools
3. the current situation in Italian Schools:
    a) technical situation: numbers of Linux machines in schools,
    b) software installed (e.g. Office and networking software)
    c) courses taught
    d) facilitation (e.g. mailing lists, wiki, blog...)
    e) developement and contributions (e.g. Italian version of word repository in Open Office Writer)
4. experiences exchange with the Taiwanese developers, practitioners and policy makers


Biography of Enrico Zini | enrico {at} debian {dot} org


Enrico Zini obtained his laurea from the Computer Science department at the University of Bologna, Italy. He is a freelance free software developer, consultant and
advocate. Enrico involves in various free software projects e.g. Debian, Debian-NP, Debtags, Guessnet and many others. He has been giving talks at various important free software conferences. As a member of a grassroot group interested in social aspects of software and the issue of digital divide, he took part in an
international cooperation mission in Tunisia in the summber 2003. Most importantly, he's a crazy visionary currently working to get Total World Domination for everyone.

摘要說明


軟體科技發展為因應使用者的需求而生，但是，許多軟體因為設計太刁鑽而無法讓使用者得心應手，自由軟體常給人以技術為中心刻板印象，很多人以為只有很懂電腦資訊科技的人才能也才會使用自由軟體，所以自由軟體無法打入一般使用者的市場(如桌面電腦市場)。但是，自由軟體的 module 特性，讓它有潛力發展各式各樣為特定使用者社群量身打造的軟體，但是卻又能不背離傳統主流的軟體發展，自由軟體的變身術也將成為軟體科技發展的新主流。 Debian Linux　已經發展出各式各樣應用於社會各層面各領域的特定客戶/社群專用的自由軟體，名為 "Custom Debian Distributions" (CDD)，講者將藉由介紹這個計畫構想以及其專案實例，說明專為特定使用者社群量身製作的自由軟體的重要性與潛力。講者也將以工作坊的形式教授如何用 Debian Linux　裡的軟體製作一套客戶專用的自由軟體套件。

本場次演講內容將涵蓋下列主題:

講題: 歐洲自由軟體在校園發展的經驗

摘要說明

自由軟體在教育領域的發展，已在歐洲各地開花，而且呈現多樣成果，有些自由軟體專案和教學光碟相關，有些則著重軟體發展的改進方法。在推動型式上，有些專案是組織單位資助發展，有些則是公司或志工團體帶頭推動。

不管是哪一種本質或型式，自由軟體的發展正大幅前進，並為歐洲地區的軟體產業生態逐漸帶來改變。藉著參與自由軟體的發展，歐洲各國正在邁向知識共享的網路新世紀。

講者本身為自由軟體運動資深參與者，亦為義大利北部數個高中校園之資訊系統顧問，講者結合其親身經驗與知識，由社會和科技兩個層面來探討自由軟體於校園發展的潛力。

本場次演講內容將涵蓋下列主題:

1. 對傳統校園資訊策略的批判 - 校園長期以來僵化的資訊策略，安裝特定專利軟體供師生使用，此舉不僅排除了其他便宜好用的軟體，並且間接幫助特定專利軟體公司圖利學生，軟性強迫學生使用特定專利軟體

2. 自由軟體在校園發展的公德價值

3. 自由軟體在義大利校園的發展狀況

- 統計數字
- 安裝何種自由軟體在校園主機上 (軟體專案實例)
- 如何將自由軟體與教學工作的結合 (e.g. crytography + GPG/PGP key signing + 數理教學)
- 推廣自由軟體的管道: 通信論壇, wiki, blog　etc.
- 如何鼓勵學生參與自由軟體的發展

Enrico Zini 畢業於世界上最古老的義大利波隆尼亞大學的資訊科技所，他長期參與自由軟體的開發，是 Debian 資深的軟體開發者，也是義大利波隆尼亞市多個學校及地方政府單位的資訊科技顧問，他也關心數位落差的議題，並且在二零零三年到突尼西亞幫助地方政府設立 Linux 電腦教室及培訓 Linux 種子師資，同年，他也應荷蘭「策略科技」 (TacticalTech.org) 一組織之邀，擔任「夏季源碼營」 (Summer Source Camp) 一活動的「輔導員」(facilitator)。Enrico 長期致力於傳道，演講經驗豐富，除了推動自由軟體在校園及非營利組織的應用之外，他也研究人機介面 (HCI)、使用者介面 (UI)、和以使用者為中心的設計 (User-Centred Design)。他目前任職於 Canonical Software 公司協助開發 Unbuntu Linux。
